Drunks and dragons
Feb. 7th, 2008 03:22 amToday is Chinese New Year's Eve, so our family was invited to a restaurant by one of dad's rich Chinese friends. He had booked four giant tables, which seated about 50 or 60 people. Most of the menfolk sat at their own table making toasts and drinking wine. Lots of wine. I've never seen Chinese people get so drunk before. I mean, usually they can't hold their alcohol at all (like me). There was this one guy (one of dad's acquaintance-friends) who got really really really loud and drunk. He started walking/swaying around our half of the restaurant shouting celebratory things in Chinese with his arms flailing dramatically. And omg, he was SO LOUD. The entire restaurant was looking our way. It was so embarrassing. Thankfully the restaurant was mostly Chinese people anyway, and weren't too bothered by it. Eventually the restaurant's owner came over, but he couldn't exactly tell Drunk Dude to be quiet because he was one of Rich Chinese Guy's guests and Rich Chinese Guy was an highly important patron. And then Drunk Dude told the restaurant's owner to translate his shoutings into English, so there was this one guy yelling things drunkenly in Chinese, and the restaurant owner yelling things in English after him. It was kinda hilarious, and also kinda oh-god-I-don't-know-these-people.
Have you ever stood on a chair (while everyone else was sitting down) in a public establishment and waved money at someone so they would come over to you and dance around you? Sounds like a strip club right? I did that tonight. Apparently the tradition is to wave red packets (with money inside) at these people dressed as dancing dragons, and they come over to you and dance around you, and you wave the red packet and hold it out of their reach (hence the chair) while they nuzzle and bump you (kinda like a stripper, right?), before finally feeding it through their dragon mouths. Nobody else wanted to do it, and I kinda felt like standing on a chair in the middle of a restaurant, so I volunteered. It was... an interesting experience.
After coming home from the restaurant, I hopped on webcam for
Daria since I owed her a session. Here's a random screencap of me I took:
