Day 1 - Favorite song
Jul. 9th, 2010 02:40 amEncountered an interesting daily meme from new LJ-friend
hunter_san (oh hai!). Going to start it now and hope that I can keep it up once work starts again.
Day 01 → Your favourite song
It's actually really hard to pick one becaue I don't have just one favorite - I have many favorites that suit different moods, ranging from the Corrs to Rammstein. I also associate songs with certain times and certain people, so while I could maybe pick "favorite song of 2003" or "favorite song that X recommended me", it's impossible to pick one overall one that sums up my taste in music. However, in the spirit of the meme, I will pick just one.
"Foolish Games" by Jewel, was the first song that I ever declared "my favorite song". I was in Grade 5 when I first heard it on the radio, probably on 101.1 TT FM. I remember that Grade 5 (1997) as the first year I actually started listening to mainstream music regularly. One quirk of growing up as a child of recent immigrants was that I knew absolutely nothing of pop culture or music. At home, dad only ever listened to Chinese opera or karaoke type songs, and mum occasionally listened to Easy Music 3MP (which played music from the 1940s-1960s). I discovered Teh Radio when I was 10, during the month that I lived with my aunt and uncle while mum, dad and Rianna were all overseas. I didn't have anything to do except listen to the radio and read old books (oh hai The Hardy Boys). A little after that, I became obsessed with Xena and decided that Jewel, at times, sounded a lot like Lucy Lawless. And here comes my totally dorky confession: I used to amuse myself by pretending it was Xena singing, and not Jewel.
Anyway. It was the first song I ever loved and have liked it ever since. It remains refreshingly untainted from any associations with other people. A couple of years ago, I downloaded the piano sheet music for it and learned to play the first page or so. Every now and then I go back to it, but I don't have the time to practice and I still fail at sight reading, so I seem to be stuck perpetually on the first page. I'll learn it eventually.
Coming up tomorrow: My favorite movie. Hmm.
