Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

Meme from [livejournal.com profile] lysachan who gave me the following questions:

1) Why teaching?
A whole bunch of reasons including: I didn't know what else to do; it was a good career choice after a history/linguistics major; it's a stable career; it allows the possibility of working overseas/travel; I love expounding on history and linguistics so why not get paid for it?; and I had a crush on my Year 12 English teacher around the time I was making university/career decisions.  But lately my mum's been telling me about her side of the family because she's been reading 'Wo Men San' (We Three), which is a memoir written by my great aunt who happens to be a famous Chinese playwright and author.  Turns out there are about 7 or 8 different family members who all turned out to be teachers or professors of some sort, just on that branch of my family tree.  So... I guess it must have just been in my genes.

2) Have you seen any movies more than five times? Which one(s)?
Hmm, I think I've probably seen Love Actually more than five times, just because I tend to watch it around Christmas time as a tradition.  D.E.B.S and Imagine Me & You, I might have seen five times, but not more than five.  I'm not good at rewatching things multiple times, unless they're Xena episodes.  :-D

3) What is the most important quality you look for in your future significant other?
A blend of optimism, fearlessness and passion.  Someone who can spark a wild joy in me, who inspires me, who can make me laugh.

4) If you could speak one language fluently (one that you don't already), what would it be and why?
Probably Mandarin actually.  I speak it, but not fluently.  And I can't really read it.  I'd like to be able to read books written in Chinese so I can better access that part of my culture.

5) What is your favourite PC game of all time?
ZOMG Y U DO THIS TO ME.  Such a hard quesiton.  O.O
Oh god, so many possible answers.  Diablo II, Baldur's Gate II, Dragon Age: Origins, Skyrim...
I'm gonna go with Sims 2 just because it's a game I always go back to that has endless replay value because of all the stuff you can import and make.  I has a NCC Voyager and a Starfleet Academy sitting in the middle of one of my neighbours alongside my Xena/Gabby family and uh... *coughGroHammersenglivingwithmecough*

6) How would you describe your childhood?
Lonely. But not too bad.

7) What was your first job (that you got paid for)?
I got paid to help out (read: be the only waitress) at dad's wee Japanese restaurant when I was 14.  $20 a night, plus occasional tips.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] daryadavoyen and [livejournal.com profile] quew and started like a week ago because I've been too busy to complete it.

A film about your life is being made, you must choose a character from a film that has already been made to play the role of you:
Uhh.  Does it have to be a Chinese actress?  Because I know like 4.  And none of them have my boobs.  Oh and Boomer from BSG, but I don't think she's been in a film.  W/e, skipping this question.

What is the best way to convince you to go through with a dare, even if it is blatantly stupid:
You'd have to go back in time and ask me before I developed fully honed decision making skills.  So maybe prior to the age of 15.

What does you handwriting look like:

Favorite job you ever had and why:

My favorite job is actually my current one as a teacher.  The main reason why is because I get to teach subjects I love and I'm constantly learning and being exposed to new things.  I like the challenge of curriculum design, and there's something really special about having a lesson go right and seeing the kids get really enthusiastic about a subject you love.

Would you rather the world came to an end at the hands of Aliens or the hands of Zombies:
I had a terrifying nightmare the other night about zombies so... probably aliens.  Then again, it would probably depend on the type of alien.  Like, giant, innard-sucking, acid-spewing cockroach aliens?  No thanks, I'll take the zombies.

What phone do you have and why:
An iPhone 4.  Because it looked pretty.

Your best friend comes to you and says they've killed somebody but they cannot tell you why, they ask you to help them cover it up, do you:
I'd insist that she tell me why.  Being kept in the dark never leads to anything good.

The last thing you purchased online:
A TRIP TO FIJI.

What is inside your fridge:
Lots of leftovers and ingredients for cooking.  Jams, fruits, 3 tubs of margarine/butter, left over birthday cake, medicine, juice, mayonnaise, cheese, ham, yoghurt, tofu and milk.

You can travel back in time and alter your past as much or little as you desire, but when you return to the present there is no guarantee that you'll have the same life or relationships, do you still go back to change anything:
Nope.  That's like asking me if I want to erase the person I am today, because that's what it would probably amount to.  And besides, I'm happy with my life exactly the way it is.  <3

"To crave and to have are as like as a thing and its shadow. For when does a berry break upon the tongue as sweetly as when one longs to taste it, and when is the taste refracted into so many hues and savors of ripeness and earth, and when do our senses know any thing so utterly as when we lack it? And here again is a foreshadowing – the world will be made whole. For to wish for a hand on ones’ hair is all but to feel it. So whatever we may lose, very craving gives it back to us again."

Day 04 → Your favourite book

Of course, this one has to go to The Blind Side of Love by Ingrid Diaz.  It technically isn't published yet, but I'm not going to let a small matter like that get in the way of this.  It will be published some day soon, and even if it's not, it will still be my favorite.  It's a funny, heart-warming love story that has characters so well written that I feel like I almost know them.  I've read it about five or six times, but the funny bits still make me laugh out loud and the srs bits still make me cry.

You can read the first draft at Ingrid's website for free, but the first draft is very different (zomg no incial virginitiez?  /bookquit) to the final version.

The list )

Day 03 → Your favourite television program

I don't think I need to explain this one.

The list )
lishesquex: (voyager - only slightly lost)
Encountered an interesting daily meme from new LJ-friend  [livejournal.com profile] hunter_san (oh hai!).  Going to start it now and hope that I can keep it up once work starts again.

Day 01 → Your favourite song
It's actually really hard to pick one becaue I don't have just one favorite - I have many favorites that suit different moods, ranging from the Corrs to Rammstein.  I also associate songs with certain times and certain people, so while I could maybe pick "favorite song of 2003" or "favorite song that X recommended me", it's impossible to pick one overall one that sums up my taste in music.  However, in the spirit of the meme, I will pick just one.

"Foolish Games" by Jewel, was the first song that I ever declared "my favorite song".  I was in Grade 5 when I first heard it on the radio, probably on 101.1 TT FM.  I remember that Grade 5 (1997) as the first year I actually started listening to mainstream music regularly.  One quirk of growing up as a child of recent immigrants was that I knew absolutely nothing of pop culture or music.  At home, dad only ever listened to Chinese opera or karaoke type songs, and mum occasionally listened to Easy Music 3MP (which played music from the 1940s-1960s).  I discovered Teh Radio when I was 10, during the month that I lived with my aunt and uncle while mum, dad and Rianna were all overseas.  I didn't have anything to do except listen to the radio and read old books (oh hai The Hardy Boys).  A little after that, I became obsessed with Xena and decided that Jewel, at times, sounded a lot like Lucy Lawless.  And here comes my totally dorky confession: I used to amuse myself by pretending it was Xena singing, and not Jewel.

Anyway.  It was the first song I ever loved and have liked it ever since.  It remains refreshingly untainted from any associations with other people.  A couple of years ago, I downloaded the piano sheet music for it and learned to play the first page or so.  Every now and then I go back to it, but I don't have the time to practice and I still fail at sight reading, so I seem to be stuck perpetually on the first page.  I'll learn it eventually.

Coming up tomorrow:  My favorite movie.  Hmm.

Redoing the Ten Things I Wish I Could Say to Ten Different People On My Flist Right Now meme:

1) You can still hurt me so much more easily than most other people could.
2)  It makes me sad that we don't talk anymore.
3)  I don't like how I feel around you.
4)  You healed something in me that was broken.  You don't know how glad I am for that.
5)  I'm sorry if I was ever cruel.
6)  There's so much I want to tell you and show you, but I can't.
7)  I think about you a lot and hope you're doing okay.
8)  I'm afraid you'll let me down, because you did it so many times in the past.
9)  I want a big, hairy mammoth just like yours.
10)  I have a pre-crush on you.  Maybe.

1) Comment to this and I will give you 3 people.
2) Post this meme with your answers.
3) Provide pictures and the names of 3 people.
4) Label which you would marry, shag, and throw off a cliff.

[livejournal.com profile] quew gave me these three names:
Xena
Janeway
Alice from Resident Evil
(I love how they're all fictional, lol)

Okay, let's see... )

Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.

1.  I secretly want to be Icelandic.

2.  When I was in primary school, I couldn't do any extracurricular activities, and rarely went to the birthday parties I was invited to because Mum didn't know how to drive and Dad worked full time.

3.  I'm only ever attracted to girls/women older than me.  And I've never been attracted to Asian women, with one exception.  (Well, two if you count my Awesome Thai Masseuse).

4.  I have a habit of chewing my hair when I'm bored, procrastinating, tired or stressed.  *gets split ends a lot*

5.  I sometimes get angry at my mother for being so weak.  I wish that she were stronger so I can stop protecting her and for once she could listen to my problems instead of the other way around.

6.  I like to stalk people online.  And I'm very good at it.

7.  I have dependency issues.  Show me love and affection, and I'll be your puppy forever.

8.  The above two items probably look a little worrying together, but don't worry, I've never been issued with a restraining order.

9.  I waver between arrogance and insecurity.

10.  My natural sleep pattern is from 4am-12pm.  Everytime I'm left to my own devices (i.e. no work or school), I slide into my own private time zone.

11.  When I was little, I believed in God, prayed, wore a cross, and kept a Bible by my bedside table.  Now I'm mostly atheist, and sometimes agnostic, depending on my mood.

12.  One of my biggest pet peeves is when people use the spoon from the sugar jar without replacing it.

13.  I make really, really bad instant coffee.  When I do drink it, I take my coffee with 40% water, 60% milk, and 3 tablespoons of sugar.  It's undrinkable half the time.  Mum regularly insults my coffee making skills.  (And I agree with her.)

14.  I was obsessed with the movie "Gia" for most of my teenage years, and I still want to visit her grave, the next time I'm in Philadelphia.

15.  I have a thing for blue eyes.

16.  I dream of eating cloudberries by a fjord.

17.  I'm absolutely hopeless at finishing computer/console games.  My longest standing record is Diablo, which I started when I was 14, and still haven't finished, though I fully intend to.

18.  When I was six, I went through this phase during which I thought the things I ate (fruit, in particular) had souls and they didn't want to be eaten, because then they would die.  So I would half eat everything my parents gave me, and hid the other half under a wooden toy crib I had.  Eventually the rotting food alerted my parents to my secret hiding place, and it did not end well for me or the fruit.

19.  I think vampires are cooler than werewolves.

20.  I had a 'boyfriend' for two weeks in Grade 5 called Darren Ferran, who I liked because he was obsessed with the Spice Girls, had pretty blue eyes and a cute English accent.

21.  I still enjoy the Spice Girls.  And the Backstreet Boys.  90s music FTW.

22.  I think I have a tendency to fall for unavailable people so that I don't actually have to do anything about it.

23.  When I die, I want to be cremated on a barge in a river.  Not sure if that's actually possible these days.

24.  There are some people in my life who make everything else dim in comparison.  I don't know if this is a blessing or a curse.

25.  I've had to edit the Facebook version of this meme and remove all of teh gay, because I'm so not out on Facebook.  *has relatives on there*

Year in review )Stood up in front of a classroom of kids and taught.  :O

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions and will you make more for next year?
No, I failed this year's resolution as expected, although I lasted longer than I thought I would.  /cryptic
I haven't thought of one for 2009 yet.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nyet.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope.

5. What countries did you visit?
None, but I'm going to Singapore before the end of the year, and I'll be in Thailand after the New Year.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
A hot Norwegian girlfriend.  A reason.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Probably my first day at Melbourne Girls' College, because it was traumatic.  And the last day of my block at Koonung, because it was bittersweet.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Surviving the Master of Teaching, Part 1.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not finding a job.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I caught two nasty colds this year, but that's all.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
This computer.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Up until about a month ago, mum was really awesome and supportive.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Appalled?  My sister... I worry she's becoming a spoilt private school kid.  Depressed - can't blame this one on anyone but myself.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Petrol, bills for internet and phone, and gaming-related expenses (computer, Xbox, WoW).

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Teaching.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
Um.  A bunch of songs from this year's Eurovision, because they were the first songs I burnt onto my mix CD which I listened to every day while driving to my placements.  And a few others.
Euroband - This Is My Life (Iceland 2008)
Olta Boka - Zemrën E Lamë Peng (Albania 2008)
Maria Haukaas Storeng - Hold On Be Strong (Norway 2008)
Amy McDonald - This Is The Life
BassHunter - Russia Privjet
Ivan Guevara - Por Amor Al Arte
Avril Lavigne - Anything But Ordinary

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? A different sort of sadder.  More resigned.
ii. thinner or fatter? About the same.  I always put on some weight during the Christmas holidays due to boring family dinners during which there is nothing to do but eat.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Stayed in touch with people more.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating.  Being emo.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Packing for Singapore/Thailand trip.  And then  dinner with family and some guests (Chin's family).  I'll probably find some time to log onto WoW too.

21. Did you fall in love in 2008?
Do Milla Jovovich, Yvonne Strahovski or Barbara Gordon count?  No.

22. What was your favorite TV program?
My two current favorite on-going TV shows are Chuck and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  I discovered Birds of Prey and instantly fell in love with the fandom.  Also still slowly working my way through Star Trek: Voyager.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope.

24. What was the best book you read?
Prose:  The Passion by Jeanette Winterson.
Poetry:  Love, Death and the Changing of the Seasons by Marilyn Hacker.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery of 2008?
I didn't really have any major ones this year.  I guess maybe Lover's Electric and Demon Hunter.

26. What did you want and get?
An Xbox 360 and Rock Band.  Wrath of the Lich King Collector's Edition.

27. What did you want and not get?
A girlfriend.  A job.  A kitten.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
A tie between Saving Face and Batman: The Dark Knight.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 22.  I stayed home and did normal staying-at-home things.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Getting a job at Koonung or one of the others that I really wanted.  Oh, and Prop 8 (and others) not passing the day after the election.  Or, you know, winning the lottery.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
It's been a year of fashion extremes.  Swinging between way-more-formal-than-I-would-usually-dress because of teaching, and old-hoodie-and-jeans now that I'm at home.

32. What kept you sane?
World of Warcraft, my new Birds of Prey fandom obsession, my sister, and a conveniently timed crush.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I went through this huge Milla Jovovich phase after I had that insanely awesome dream of her, Eliza Dushku and Rachel Nichols.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
The US election and gay rights.

35. Who did you miss?
Friends who aren't here.  People who are no longer in my life as much as I'd like them to be.  And my stupid ass cat, Stormy.

36. Who was the best new person you met?
Ann.  *waves hello*

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008:
1.  Some things just aren't meant to be.
2.  Life is like high school.  It's a schizophrenic popularity contest that you can never win.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"I'm all out of love, all out of faith /  I would give everything just for a taste / But everything's here, all out of place / Losing my memory, saving my face."  -- KT Tunstall

Dear [livejournal.com profile] zatapoiki,
I don't really know how to tell you this, but our romance is over.  I think I realized it when your dog ran amok with George Bush and his wife and I saw you pull the clothes off Bill Clinton.  I'm sure you're ashamed enough to understand that your Honda sucks.  I'm returning your left ear to you, but I'll keep your collection of butterflies as a memory. You should also know that I told in my confession today about our friendship.

In pain,

1) Lishesque - Probably horribly narcissistic of me, but I really like my name. :D

2) Love, The Blind Side Of - A novel being (re)written by [livejournal.com profile] wickedkiwi. My well-being depends upon regular updates.

3) Linguistics - One of my majors in my undergrad, and a big influence in my life over the past 3 years. A couple of subjects I took for this really changed my worldview.

4) Livejournal - Such a huge part of my internetlife. I don't know what I'd do without LJ. *hugs it*

5) Lyan - The person responsible for getting me hooked on WoW (props to her for that lolz). Also one of my hawt frexes. I <3 her muchly.

6) Lesbians - They make me happy (in many ways). I also really like seeing random lesbians holding hands... they make me smile when I pass them on the street.

7) Lara Croft - More specifically, Angelina Jolie with a British accent as Lara Croft. Hawtness doesn't get much hawter than that. Srsly.

8) Lychees - One of my favorite fruits.

9) Lucy Lawless - I actually have a love/hate relationship with LL. Sometimes I really dislike being reminded that no, she isn't Xena (made most painfully clear whenever she talks and her strong Kiwi accent pwns my brain), she's just a normal human being, and Xena isn't real. But for me, Xena is real... and Lucy Lawless will always embody Xena in my head, so I have a certain level of obsession with Lucy Lawless. If that makes any sense.

10) Learning - Never wanna stop. The awesome thing is that I'm choosing a career that will pay me to learn. :)
