Day 2 of Student Teaching
Zomg!
The year 8s are supposed to be learning about medieval history this year in their SOSE/English subject and they're just about finished with Vikings. I thought it'd be an awful shame if I didn't get a chance to teach them a subject area that I know so well/am so passionate about, so I offered to take their last class on Vikings (!!!). And by last class, I also mean their third class. Apparently they've only had bits of 2 lessons on Vikings which is criminal, really. So ZOMG... next week I'll be doing a half lesson on the Vikings and another half lesson (on a different day) on Haikus. O.O
I'm really excited about this at the moment, and my head is exploding with ideas of what to do. I'm sure the mind numbing fear and panic will set in later.
Today was pretty good. It was a lot less stressful than yesterday, so I enjoyed it more. This morning when I got off the train, I saw an MGC student so I decided to follow her because I didn't want to get lost again. Unfortunately, she decided to take a short cut through the back streets in the most CONVOLUTED manner imaginable. It soon became pretty obvious that I was following her, because I was following pretty closely due to my fear of getting lost in the winding back streets, and my shoes were all loud and clacky, and I took every turn she did, and crossed the roads when she did. She was probably paranoid as hell by the end of it. But I got to the school in much shorter time than yesterday, so I deem my scary stalking/following a success. *beams*
I'm starting to get to know Mordreth's year 8s pretty well. This morning during Tutorial, the teacher was marking the roll when suddenly some girls in the centre of the room started screaming and squealing and running away from their table. Guess what it was? YES. A COCKROACH. Lolz. I was actually pretty amused (I wasn't sitting anywhere near them so I wasn't bothered at all). Eventually a particularly brave girl called Emily picked it up and took it to the window and let it out. I was even more impressed when Emily gave a speech later on about why she wanted to be elected an SRC representative and mentioned that she was new and had moved 7 times. There was another girl I noticed in that class, called Emma... a tall, chubby girl who was painfully shy, but nominated herself for SRC representative. Unfortunately she was the only one to miss out. I felt really bad for her, because it was obvious that giving the speech had been hard for her, and that she had really wanted the position. But of course, the more popular girls got the positions. :-/
After Tutorial, Mordreth had Period 1 free, so I found my way to P6 (portable 6) because last night I had tracked down the timetable of the only other History teacher that the school has (Sheryl), and marked down her classes for my free periods. Sheryl already had a student teacher from Monash University, which is probably why she couldn't take me, but the other student teacher (Deborah) was really nice and said I was welcome to watch her teach. She was impressively good... I was like :O. Apparently it was only Deborah's second week in her placements, and she was already giving a really good full lesson. I took many notes during that class. :D It also refreshed my memory of World War I.
I went to Mordreth's year 9 "Write Now!" class in Period 3, which was also quite interesting. I had to interview two students as part of my homework for this week, and so I picked 2 random girls. It was... quite an insight, actually. The second girl, Caitie, told me that she lives with both her parents but she thinks that they've split up but are hiding it from her and her brother. Thinking about it now, it's like... wow, that's a really personal thing. And it's quite a strange feeling, being in this position of responsibility/care/trust, because I've never had a complete stranger confide in me that way before.
I think the interviewing students homework task was a really good thing to do in the first week, because it's helped me look past the cliche labels like the "popular girls" and whatever, and see them as individuals. /mush
Anyway, I'm going to go look at my old Vikings stuff to see if I can use it in my lesson planning. :D Zomg excitingz!
