Political rant
Dear world,
Plz 2 be stopping ur bashing on China.
kthxbai.
I'm sick of people saying that we should boycott the Olympics because of the Tibet. Do they seriously think that boycotting the Olympics is going to change the political situation in China? If anything, it's going to make it worse (in fact, it probably already has). News flash, the Chinese government doesn't give a crap about your opinions on human rights. What they care about is holding together a country of 1.3 billion people (many whose loyalty for their own home town or province far outweighs any loyalty they have to China as a nation), and try to not lose too much face in the process. So they're just going to be even more authoritarian, even more secretive, because that's always been their response in the face of Western criticism.
China's overwhelming concern since 1949 has been to prove itself on the world stage. Most of the formerly colonized nations have an inferiority complex already, and China doubly so because of the whole Communism versus the West thing. Most Western countries didn't even recognise China as a legitimate nation until the 1970s (with Taiwan seen as the true Republic of China), which is ridiculous, if you stop and think about it. And ever since then it's been criticism, disparagement, scandal and condemnation. When my father first came to Australia, he used to pretend he was from Hong Kong because you were less likely to get a job if you were from the mainland.
The thing that annoys me most is that people are just joining the bandwagon because it's popular to do so. Most of them have no idea about China's political history, barely any idea about Tibet's political history, and seem to think that there's nothing wrong with politicising the Olympics. The Olympics should be an event celebrating international goodwill and human achievement, not a convenient chance for everyone to gang up on China AGAIN.
Bloody hell.

When We were called Sick man of Asia, We were called The Peril.
When We are billed to be the next Superpower, We are called The threat.
When We were closed our doors, You smuggled Drugs to Open Markets.
When We Embrace Freed Trade, You blame us for Taking away your jobs.
When We were falling apart, You marched in your troops and wanted your "fair share".
When We were putting the broken peices together again, "Free Tibet" you screamed, "it was an invasion!"
( When Woodrow Wilson Couldn't give back Birth Place of Confucius back to Us,
But He did bought a ticket for the Famine Relief Ball for us.)
So, We Tried Communism, You hated us for being Communists
When We embrace Capitalism, You hate us for being Capitalist.
When We have a Billion People, you said we were destroying the planet.
When We are tried limited our numbers, you said It was human rights abuse.
When We were Poor, You think we are dogs.
When We Loan you cash, You blame us for your debts.
When We build our industries, You called us Polluters.
When we sell you goods, You blame us for global warming.
When We buy oil, You called that exploitation and Genocide.
When You fight for oil, You called that Liberation.
When We were lost in Chaos and rampage, You wanted Rules of Law for us.
When We uphold law and order against Violence, You called that Violating Human Rights.
When We were silent, You said you want us to have Free Speech.
When We were silent no more, You say we were Brainwashed-Xenophoics.
Why do you hate us so much? We asked.
"No," You Answered, "We don't hate You."
We don't Hate You either,
But Do you understand us?
"Of course We do," You said,
"We have AFP, CNN and BBCs..."
What do you really want from us?
Think Hard first, then Answer...
Because you only get so many chances,
Enough is Enough, Enough Hypocrisy for this one world.
We want One World, One Dream, And Peace On Earth.
- This Big Blue Earth is Big Enough for all of Us.

I don't believe everyone should suddenly shut up and pretend to agree with everything 'China' says, (sorry, i use '' because countries can't speak!!) but I don't agree with the way things are being done (um, i mean the way the *protests* and *criticisms* are being done). and agree that most people are just on the 'bandwagon', yes. I mean; *I* don't know enough about it all to really have a firm position, (although I can still have a reaction to the things i hear about), and think it's ridiculuos for people like me to get in there and start telling a nation what to do. Also, completely agree about the tactics backfiring; about politicising olympics = bad; and um, everything more or less.

What China has been doing to Tibet through physical, cultural and political abuse is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. How do you propose we force China to stop supressing Tibet other than "Ganging up on" poor, misunderstood China?
However, given the massive figurehead that China is going to be in the world's close economic future I don't believe boycotting anything is going to achieve anything. Perhaps boycotting trade with the country would; but that would in turn punish 1.3 billion people who have nothing to do with the torture and suppression of Tibet.
But, seriously, while I agree on your stance on boycotting the Olympics, stop making excuses for China because they are fully culpable.

I did modern Chinese history in my undergrad too, but you could be right - maybe I don't. Feel free to make your case. I'll listen/read.
Torture and abuse are strong words... do you have any solid evidence?

Well, see... I don't believe anyone should be forcing China into doing anything.
