So I just caught up on Dollhouse.  Here are my thoughts.

OH GOD. Why is that a show always gets really, really good right before it's cancelled?? They bring in this awesome slashy Caroline/Bennett subplot in Episode 11 of Season 2 two episodes before the series finale. The flashbacks of Caroline and Bennett are so cute. Like the bit where Bennett is the nerdy, quiet, uber-intelligent girl trying to find a table to sit down and eat at, and Caroline is the hot, confident, slightly brash, intimidating lesbian who easily drives off the popular kids and invites her to sit with her. And the hair washing OH GOD THE HAIR WASHING.

All through the episode, I was looking forward to the Echo-Caroline/Bennett confrontation once Echo got her Caroline imprint back.... BUT THEN BENNETT GETS SHOT IN THE HEAD (BY DOCTOR SAUNDERS, NO LESS).  I didn't see it coming at all.  I think I blurted out "holy shit!" when it happened.  And there was even blood-spatter-on-the-face à la Tara Death Scene.  Oh Joss.  Nobody does unexpected/traumatic death scenes like you do.

That wasn't even the most unexpected twist, either.  That whole thing with Boyd?  Did not see that coming either.

And then in the VERY LAST EPISODE, what do we get?  FELICIA DAY FLIRTING WITH LESBIANISM.  In a perfect world, it would have been Ballard shot in the head in 2x11 and not Bennett.  In a perfect world, there would be another season that takes place in the years between 2009 and 2020.  There'd be Echo/Bennett tension and eventually reconciliation, as well as gay!Felicia character.  It would have been awesome.  That said, I don't mind how Dollhouse ended.  Enough things were wrapped up to give me a sense of satisfaction, and there was a genuinely happy ending (mostly).  There have been too many shows where the ending leaves me a broken, weeping heap on the floor (looking at you Xena) or going ZOMGWTFBBQ (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Sarah Connor Chronicles etc).

I haven't really made up my mind about Dollhouse.  There were moments where it shone, and moments where it completely failed to live up to its potential.  I'm sorry that it never made me fall in love with it.  Or maybe I was just expecting too much.  I don't know.  Overall, shallow being that I am, I'm mostly just sad that there won't be a weekly dose of Eliza Dushku anymore.  Actually, now that I think about it - it's not that shallow to miss that, right?  TV lacks kick-ass female leads.  It's sad to see another one disappear.  *sigh*
