Momentous happenings!
Oct. 25th, 2007 12:44 amNow, the important events of real life...
Monday was my last Viking Studies class. We had a class party. People brought Viking food and bottles of mead and dressed up. One guy came as a bare chested Viking complete with horns, a red cape and fur. And a huge spear. He "raided" another class for an extra table and chairs because we had too many people and not enough seats. I think pretty much everyone was there. It was sad, though, because it was the last class of Viking Studies ever. Stupid Melbourne Model. :( It's so wrong that a subject with this much vitality that so many people love and are passionate about can get cancelled just like that.
Tuesday was my last linguistics class. It didn't hit me until some time afterwards, but this is A Big Deal. Linguistics has been a constant part of my life for the last three years -- more constant than a lot of other things. I've learnt so many things from this course... it really has changed the way I view the world. And it's taught me so much about identity and cultural differences and people in general. I've become really fond of the department too... the lecturers are the awesomest people, and they have this weird, dorky sense of humour that only other linguists/linguistics students get. I think I'll miss that.
Also, Tania is hot. Hottest tutor ever. I'll miss her too. :D
Tomorrow is my last class EVER for my Arts Degree. It won't be my last day at uni though, since I'm going back next year to do the Master of Teaching. It's kinda scary, actually. I don't wanna move on from my bludgey Arts degree that only requires me to go out 3 days a week. I fear it has ruined me for a life of actual work. Oye.
I started watching Gilmore Girls today. I want a daughter like Rory. The show is not very relaxing though. Their hectic lives stress me out. :-)
Now, I must go and translate some Old English.... FOR THE VERY LAST TIME.
K bai.
P.S.

Random things post
Aug. 13th, 2007 08:59 pm1. I am certain I am going to do badly in Semantics this semester. Main reason: my tutor is Tania Strahan. Sorry, Dr. Tania Strahan. She's the hottest tutor I've ever had. She's a rather brilliant linguist, not to mention tall, Scandinavian, gorgeous, and a musician (plays bass guitar or something in a band). Oh, and she rides to uni on a bicycle in like... tight bike shorts. Sometimes she's late and doesn't have time to change so she turns up all sweaty and flushed and... nevermind. -.-
I've had her for Intro to Linguistics in first year, which went somewhat okay, and also for Syntax last year, which was a disaster. Anyway. Dr. Tania Strahan? Bad news for my grades. *nods*
2. I bought a Nintendo DS a while back. Now I'm considering getting the new Pokemon game. I know, sad isn't it? And Xin, NO PIKACHU COMMENTS (nor you, Jackie).
3. I can't be bothered doing more posts about my trip to America because I've been home a month so it feels kind of pointless and I'm too busy *coughplayingWoWcough* with uni. But I'll upload photos up onto flickr bit by bit and one day, soon, I will linkr you to them.
4. Some days, when I remember certain things, I feel like an arse. Today is one of those days.
5. My WoW server (Elune) is down for maintenance for two days. Woe.
6. I watched the BBC adaptation of Fingersmith on the weekend. I liked it. Elaine Cassidy played Maud really well. Not to mention, she's cute. :-D
7. Trivia bot: What's the past tense of the verb "to ring"? (Hint: what's the past tense of the verb "to dive")
Assignments suck
Oct. 12th, 2006 07:38 amHaven't played World of Warcraft for 32.5 hours.
Oh, the pain!
Almost fell asleep around 4am but pushed past the pain barrier and completed the assignment somewhat lucidly. Hooray!
P.S - My Syntax tutor is SO HOT. Tall. Gorgeous figure. Speaks fluent Norwegian. You can't beat Norwegian. And, she plays the bass guitar in a band. AND! She's a doctor (of linguistics). Dr Tania. How hot is that? Hawt. *nods*
Significant progress
Aug. 1st, 2006 11:54 pmWoW is offline for maintenance.
*mutter* ... *drums fingers* ... *twitch*... *nervous tic develops*
I had my third lecture with Jennifer, and I'm pleased to report significant progress! Today I was outside the lecture theatre first cos I got there early, and a few minutes later she walked over from further down the corridor, and while she was walking, she smiled at me from afar! *beams* And then /she/ was the one to say hi first and then /she/ followed me to inside the lecture theatre AND, of her own volition, she sat next to me. *happy stalker hops*
Last lecture, one of our homework tasks was to analyse a bunch of sentences in Scots Gaelic and then Mbabaram (an Australian language). The Mbabaram task was really hard. Basically, we were given 13 different sentences in the language without translation of any kind and told to pick out the one which was wrong grammatically. It sucked because the language has no fixed word order... so words can appear in any random order in the sentence, as long as the case marker on each word is right. I stared at the sentences for like 20 minutes in utter confusion. Anyway, after much frustration and brain strainage, I figured it out. And I'm glad I did because some girls were talking today, before the lecture, about how hard it was and how they couldn't do it at all, and I agreed that it was hard (but didn't add that I couldn't do it). Jennifer didn't say anything, cos she's very quiet. She hardly ever talks, in fact,
I am looking forward to my first tutorial with both Jennifer and Tania (hot tutor) tomorrow morning. Yayness!
*hophop*
And since WoW is offline for the night (hiss), I'm going to go get some much needed sleep. :-)
*wanders off*
I'm too tired to type in paragraphs
Mar. 22nd, 2006 02:38 am- I learnt to pronounce French Rs like a French person.
- We learnt how to do voiced and voiceless palatal, velar and uvular fricatives in Phonetics. As a result...
- Much of the Phonetics tutorial alternated between sounding like a cat hissing and a cat hacking up a furball.
- I skipped Karate to get started on an assignment. Felt bad about it.
- In Russian Revolutions, the hot Russian tutor gave half the lecture in a very sexy Russian accent. I couldn't help but smile.
- Didn't arrive home until 8pm. So tired.
Last Friday, Saturday, Sunday:
- I met my LJ xenite friends Ephie (

- I was terribly nervous before meeting Ephie and Penny but everything went just fine.
- I spent 2 hours watching Finding Nemo on a Sony flatscreen TV in the middle of Melbourne Central with Ephie while waiting for Penny to arrive.
- Just as Penny arrived, we were pounced upon by a random, rabid anti-war activist who accused us of being born again Christians. o.O
- We went to Ephie's place and watched The Biggest Loser because Penny

- On Saturday, we went to Luna park.
- Public transport was terribly crowded because of the Commonwealth Games.
- Ephie dressed up as Xena which involved wearing a bra on the outside (as a breastplate) and did crazy things around Melbourne while we filmed her.
- People stared at her and took pictures.
- I concluded that Ephie is very brave.

- Dracula's is the BEST RESTAURANT EVER.
- It's a comedy cabaret restaurant which had amazing atmosphere and entertained us thoroughly for over 4 hours.
- I think my favorite was Japanese RMIT students, the Matrix ping pong, the Eastern European female wrestler and the pole dancing (!), but there was so much random funny little snippets scattered throughout.
- The whole thing was just brilliant.

- My version of "The Poke":
Dimentia: *comes over to clear away our dessert plates* Can I get you anything else, darlings?
Me: I think you're really hot.
Dimentia: What?
Me: *louder* I think you're really hot!
Dimentia: *looks bemused and possibly blushes* You're just saying that 'cos you're drunk.
Me: Nope, I thought you were hot before I was drunk. :-D
Dimentia: Aww, you're sweet. But it's the corset... it pushes everything out the top.
Someone else, possibly Penny: *says something that I don't hear because close proximity to Dimentia has addled my senses*
Dimentia: *says something about corsets that I can no longer remember* ... the plastic ones are no good. It has to be metal... and hard.
Me: *reaches out finger tentatively, makes a small detour around her arm, pokes her corset right under her boobs*
Jess/Nat: OMG YOU JUST TOUCHED HER TITS!
Penny: Shhhhh.

- On Sunday, we went to a Melbourne xenite gathering in Weribee.
- I've never been in a room with so many xenites. Hell, I didn't know Melbourne /had/ this many xenites.
- We watched lots of videos.
- There was the cutest little kitten there. SO CUTE.
- Afterwards, we had dinner at KFC.
- Ephie and I shared an Xtreme meal. I still can't remember the name of that other meal deal, and it's bugging me.
- Then we went to The Glass House aka Girl Bar and drank stuff, and listened to amusing karaoke.

I'm too tired now to even type in dot points so I will now talk in one long continuous stream with barely any punctuation because I've just finished half of my Histories of Sexualities reading and my brain is leaking out of my left ear not that the reading was particularly hard but because I need sleep really really badly but anyway I just wanna finish up by saying that

And now I shall sleep.
Day 2 of 2nd year uni
Feb. 28th, 2006 11:12 pmThat is, the replacement lecturer (NOT the one that was listed in the handbook *seethes*) stutters. I'm not talking about the occasionally stuttery yet engaging speaker, or even the cute, hesitant, Tara stuttering. I'm talking "The R.. r.. r.. r.. r.. russian revolution had a profound effect on th.. th.. th.. th.. the ..the .. the.. *trails off, stares into space for long moments* the 20th century." When he stutters, his eyes glaze over and it's like he's in some sort of mini-trance for 10 seconds... or sometimes even 20. Also, he has this disturbing way of facing just one side of the room for the entire time he's talking; it's like the other half isn't even there. I couldn't concentrate at all for the entire lecture and kept drifting off and thinking of other things. At one point I had to force myself to silently repeat everything he said in my head to focus on what he was saying, but then my brain went numb from the effort of trying to hold broken sentences together while trying to understand the rather difficult course material at the same time and I stopped trying. The only time he didn't stutter was when he was reading huge slabs of information which were pasted into the powerpoint (that nobody had time to copy down). I kind of wish he'd read the whole damn lecture. *sigh* No offence to stutterers, but stuttering and lecturing do /not/ go together. He also sucks because his lecture had no structure to it at all, and it was impossible to make any effective notes. This is really bad because even when a lecturer is bad at speaking, I can usually get something out of it from just copying notes - but not if the notes are crappy too! Gah. I already know of one person who's going to transfer out of this subject, which is unfortunate because she was someone I knew from medieval European history last year, and we could have hung out. I briefly considered changing subjects, but the stuff is really interesting, and I need to do the Russian Revolution in case I want to teach it one day. Also, Russians are interesting. Speaking of which! Omg, one of the tutors? Julia Ulyannikova. So hot. So female. SO RUSSIAN! *flails dramatically*
And guess what?
( Cut because this post is getting long )
